Car booked in for modification on Thursday. Demanded the garage come and pick it up and they said yes and apologised for all the problems.
Will wait and see if this is a fix, or not.

Bart could you tell me what age your Kona is and what mileage it has done.
Have past on all info on to my dealer who at present hasn't experienced any problems with timing chain noise as yet but thought it would be of interest if it occurred plus they could always contact Bristol Street, Exeter to get further information.
It would be interesting if you are able to find out what the chassis range is so that we can compare.
Good luck for Thursday and await with interest.

Hi
Had my car back on Friday with a new timing chain and tensioner and the chain covered ‘filed’ still not impressed with this ‘modification’. By Saturday afternoon the same rattle on start up was back. Hyundai sent AA back out to check who then took me straight back to the dealer. They were very surprised to see me back. The service manager said it sounded fine and was very dismissive and in my opinion ignorant. Like many of you have found it doesn’t always do it and obviously when he stated it - it didn’t make the noise. However they have had my car back in and another hire car given. They said they will take another look. I am beginning to ask the question whether these cars are actually fit for purpose as currently it spends more time in the garage than on the road.
Hopefully I will get further answers soon and keep you updated.

Bart mentioned a chassis break for this mod - do you have any idea what it is?
Thanks as very interested in outcome

Ok guys
Here we go
My Kona was purchased at the end of Jan 2019
Now has around 5600 miles on it
Fault first registered in FEBRUARY!
Four complaints raised
Bristol Street now have a new service manager. (Well there's a thing!)

Had a call from the garage today saying the damage was worse than expected so want to keep it and spend more time checking everything is ok before they hand it back on Monday.
Seriously, what did they expect with timing chain thrashing about!

I am trying to remain calm but do really want rid of this car.
I'll wait and check it out when it comes back on Monday

I had two noises from what I believe is the cam chain
Firstly when cold. And the colder it was the more pronounced the metallic sounding noise. Lasting for about 2-4 seconds
When hot there was another noise and this noise was the cam chain (now lubricated with oil and warm thrashing about until the oil pressure got to where it needed to be) again for about 2-4 seconds

BUT

There is another constant noise at tick over (more abrasion noises that's always been there.) that stops when engine rpm is increased. This will of course increase the oil pressure and if the hydraulic tensioner is the problem makes sense that the noise goes away. This is on my radar and if this is still there it will be going back.

Keep complaining people and keep talking. Its the only way change happens.

Thanks for all the comments. Its helped to know I'm not going mad or the only one with issues.

Cheers

Hi
I bought my car brand new at the end of October I noticed the noise around December but my family told me I was paranoid as they couldn’t hear it 🙄. Eventually they did so I phoned in May to get it looked at.
My car currently has 3700 on the clock.
My car does exactly what your saying BartStilgo. I’ve noticed exactly the same thing at low RPM and sounds like it’s spluttering.

Update after 4th complaint and dealing directly with Hyundai. They have now got a field technician coming to look but not for 3 weeks so I’m in a hire car for the next 3 weeks at least.

I totally agree the more we talk the more something will get done. I am starting to believe this may be a very large manufacturing fault. I think for the price of these cars they should be a lot better. It’s the biggest mistake I’ve made buying this car.

Hopefully they have found the fix for yours and it fixes it.

Thanks Bart & Zoetaylor69 for your updates and please keep, keeping us others up to date with your problems.
At the present I have not experienced this problem BUT certainly keeping a strict watch out or should I say keeping my ears alert.
Its such a shame as up to now I am loving every minute of it.
