Hi,

What is strange is that this engine is not new, i think it was launched in 2015, so, is odd only now we are facing this problem.
Like other brands, kia/huynday, buy parts from a lot of supplyers, can they supply a serie of defective tensioners???

Thanks davrob after seeing what zoetaylor and bart have written i’m not 100% sure what to do with mine. It’s obvious the repair that Hyundai are doing isn’t working. Do I want my engine stripped down and get it back still same ? Do I just think it’s got 5 years warranty ? By what zoetaylor says Hyundai technical don’t seem to be bothered wait until it goes bang then we’ll have another look !! I’ll definitely report it then i’ve done what I can sounds a bit defeatist . Amazing how one manufacturer ie VW/Audi actively recalls there cars with a fix and another doesn’t seem to care !
Drove mine today for the first time this week got the clatter 2/3 seconds on start up after that went 50 miles drove absolutely beautiful switch off for approximately 1hour started and clatter again drove home again no problem ,that’s it for another week. My other half is of the opinion to trade it in for a Mokka trouble is I like the car plus it’s my 5th Hyundai.
davrob you say yours is no problem, I’ve looked at my chassis/ Vin number plus engine number on the V5 / logbook and it looks like my car and engine were assembled in Ulsan Korea . You can tell this with letter U next to the 6 numbers eg U123456 same for engine and Vin . I’d be interested if possible to see where yours was assembled could be if it was assembled in a different country it has a different supplier of parts don’t know if Kona’s are assembled in different countries or just one country ? Should be the same spec but you never know. If you tell me the letter i’ll look it up any help would be appreciated thanks .

What a decision for you to make Mutley mind you having worked for Vauxhalls Service Dept Franchise for 40plus years I certainly know which model I prefer and its my 2nd Hyundai. Seeing the amount of recalls Vauxhalls have against Hyundai , Hyundai are miles ahead of having the least and this can be proved by looking at the website and seeing what recalls each have had. Getting back to your request :- Model is a Premium SE - Engine No. G3LCKU131358 - Chassis No. LKU304107 - Version EURO AG M61A11
Hope that helps but I would think its worth dropping at note to Hyundai of your thoughts and perhaps mention others with same concerns.
Don't buy a Mokka you'll regret it.

Thanks davrob that’s blown that theory out of the water same as mine Ulsan Korea , back to the drawing board. Thanks for the advice on the Mokka think I might give it a miss. I think most manufacturers have problems in one way or another just depends on how much they spend on it to resolve it or just deny there’s a problem . Things in the motor trade move very rapidly i’m a bit like you did my time at a Ford dealer and then many years 24 at a breakdown organization the one that looks after Hyundai funny enough!! now working with a large engine manufacturer testing mind non of them have this problem thanks again davrob.

Hi,

The theory of wastgate arm touching the heat protection of the turbo was wrong. I already put it together again.
Someone chande oil and il filter, just to discard that option?

Best regards

Paulo

So it likes we are only left for Hyundai / Kia to come up with some modification or recall or lastly which does not sound a good idea is to wait for an engine failure.
It appears that there is not anybody on this chapter who has a high mileage Kona to see whether things improve or get worse.
Is there anybody out there with a high mileage Kona with or without these experiences.?

Hi,

Today i took the car to a diferent place (Roady) where a know the chief mechanic and he already lived a similar situation with an hyundai and he advised me to presssure the dealer to replace the hydraulic tensioner of the camshaft.
That hydraulic tensioner must contain the oil even when the engine is off and even when it's knew, it is already precharged with oil.
Beeing a mechanic, and because he was already tired of running to the dealer without solving this, he forced the dealer to replace the tensioner in front of him and it solved the noise.
Unfortunately, with some brands, this is the only way to deal with this kind of situations.

Tomorrow i will leave the car on the dealer, i will post the result soon.

Feedback Time

Today I sat with the Franchise Director and the new Service Manager at Bristol Street Hyundai in Exeter.
The car has been back from the garage for two weeks in which time I have driven it twice. The first time there was a rattle as per before the repair but last Saturday (Nice hot day which helps with oil flow especially as it had an oil change too.) it was hardly noticeable. An improvement on before. Went out tonight and there was still a rattle but for only a second.

So within my meeting I discussed two issues. Firstly the treatment I didn't get from the garage when I originally raised the fault and a whole load of other little niggles and secondly the reliability issue and this bl**dy start up noise.
So I will not tire you with the dealer issues except to say they offered me two years free servicing for the lack of support I received.

At the moment I am still driving the car and monitoring the start up noise and reporting it to the service manager if anything gets worse. He has agreed for the car to go back to Hyundai UK for investigation and checking to ensure everything is good. If they give it the thumbs up then I'm afraid its a case of living with it but at least I will get a report saying this.

I have to wait for Hyundai UK to come back with a date for the car to go off 'up North' for testing and that will take a couple of weeks.
There was some discussion about this noise being a 'characteristic' of the car but I said this was an excuse and would not let them use this to brush me off. My argument is that Hyundai do have a problem that behind the scenes they will be working on to fix. This could take them a year to resolve and we will all probably find a revised engine release and the disappearance of this 'characteristic' some time in the future but this does not resolve the problem we have to live with. Part of the criteria for the car going away for test was to drive another car with the same engine, which I have done already only to find it was similar.

So I would suggest to any of you who are concerned about the noise to get an appointment with the franchise director and get them to send the car away to have it checked over. Keep the pressure on the dealer and ensure any work they do is supported by documentation. The same with emails. Every email you have telling you things are ok is evidence when things go wrong.

I have to list ALL the issues since having the car to the service manage as he wants to offer these to Hyundai UK, so this will happen shortly. Then we have to wait, again until I get the call for the car to go off North for testing.

I think this issue is very much on the Hyundai radar but only if you are complaining. The satisfaction of its customers, as I found today, is monitored and declines in positive feed back are reviewed closely putting demands on the franchise to sort this out.

I raised a complaint with Hyundai Finance too. Go do the same if you are less than six months into the vehicle or you have evidence of the fault raised within six months. The more you complain the more will happen.

Not sure if this is a good result but if more of us can get these cars back to Hyundai UK then that is a good thing.

Good luck

There is no doubt that is the tensioner, but there is no gain in change it because at this point even the new ones don´t retain the oil with the engine off. The Kia/Hyundai already have this problem spoted but without solution, at least for now.

I´m wainting for a guy that represents Kia Portugal in a few weeks to evaluate the complaint.
Yesterday, i start up at least 4 Kia stonics with the same engine and the noise is there in every one.

Everybody need to complaint to see this solved.

Thanks Bart and Paulo for your write ups and it will be interesting what modifications if any come of this.
I am doing a 1000 mile trip over the next week so all ears will be listening.
