Saturday 10:30 is pick up time and hand over for the new (nearly) Kona.
Finely the end is in site.

Let's hope we never have to go through that again.
Time to settle back and get on with some motoring.

Thanks again for all your support and encouragement.
Hope you all have trouble free miles for years ahead

Just to confirm, now sat on the drive our replacement Kona has finally arrived.
Still waiting on two pieces of documentation that should be in the post
The first is the change to the PCP as the car VIN number is on the documentation and needs updating and the other just a certificate for the underbody sealing.
A few struggles with all the paperwork as the process we have gone through is so rare nobody was quite sure what to do.

Once again thanks to all who have followed our storey which started on the 5th March and ended today (7th Decemeber)

Happy (and reliable) Motoring.

Good for you Bart! Congrats! I hope you will have no more trouble with the new car!
Mine is getting a little bit noisier in these cold days. Especialy the first 3-6 miles after a cold start. I can now hear a metalic sound like something is hitting a metal surface at around 2000 rpm. It's hard to describe the sound.
Oil was changed at 2500 miles. Didn't ask the dealer if any small metal parts were noticed in the old oil.
Engine behaves normaly, mpg is ok.
The rattle sound on startup now appears only when the engine is warm and then parked for a few hours. Didn't notice it on cold starts.

Keep updating us guys of your status with this engine!

Best regards

That’s great news Bart glad you finally got it sorted.

My rattle is still there and gradually getting worse everyday. Hyundai have told me again there is nothing wrong and until it breaks down there is nothing they can do. Recently some mornings the engine hasn’t started and has taken a couple of tries to get it working. Hyundai’s response is “the engine is cold so it needs time to warm up” I know cars 20 years old regardless of weather start first time.
Hopefully I can go back to Hyundai now and ask them to check the oil. I may take it to a different garage and get them to check the oil first as I really don’t trust Hyundai.
If I’m honest I had given up and counting down the months til I can exchange it but Bart has given me new hope to go back to Hyundai and fight my corner.

I have the same problem with this 1.0 t-gdi since I have bought the car (5.000 miles since then). My KIA dealer tells me the same: Drive it until it breaks! We will give you a new engine.
And the grinding and rattle sound gets louder from day to day. It feels even uncomfortable driving this car at this moment, becouse the sound is sometimes too loud.
The second thing: You never know when it is eventually going to break and than you have to calculate with it, no mater where you are going with this stupid car.
I am visiting the dealer tomorrow, for the third time. They will check everything once again and send a report of the engines condition to KIA/Hyundai. We will see what happens after that.
I will write a feedback here, as soon as I have new information from my dealer.
After reading posts here and on other forums (UK, Germany, Poland) I'm beginning to think that this 1.0 t-gdi has a serious issue. We'll see...

Update:

It's the chain and the chain tensioner. Both need to be replaced. The chain got stretched and it's making that strange grinding and rattle sound.

I would advise everyone to get their engines checked if there is any rattle or grinding sound from the engine, especially in the region where the timing chain is placed!

The KIA-Service mechanics told me, that there hasn't been any further damage to the engine.
They also didn't make any problems at all. The service and costumer support was actually very good. Although I am not from the UK and it is not Hyundai, it's KIA, but that shouldn't make a huge difference at all.

I'll write an update, as soon as the car is (hopefully) fixed.

Best regards to all of you!

Hello Moonwalker and Everyone!

I would like to buy a KIA Stonic 1.0 t-gdi but I'm now very worried. Is this rattle (chain and chain tensioner) is a common problem? And is there any information in which region does this timing chain is placed? I'm at Hungary.

Hello Phobion!

The timing chain and the tensioner had been replaced in my case. All warranty. There is no more grinding, but the rattle on startup occures sometimes. It is not that noisy as it was before, but it is still there, especially when I drive the car and reach the operating temperature and then leave it for about 40 minutes and than start it again.
I'm not sure if this is a comon problem, but as you can see, many owners are complaining on the same or similar issue. The good thing - there is warranty if things go wrong. The bad thing - if it is a common problem, it is likely to happen again, after the chain replacement.
