Recently bought 2024 Kona Hybrid after parting with VW iD3 and, much as I am enjoying the car, I am very disappointed with speed alerts. Like many others, I get alerts when passing many schools at any time day or night to tell me the limit is 20mph. One really annoying problem is if I drive past a local school in West to East direction it pings for 20mph, if I travel the same road East to West I am told it is a 30mph limit!

This makes me wonder if the warning is triggered by GPS, on board mapping or by roadside signage?

I often get speed alerts when I pass the 300 metres warning signs rather than the actual speed limit signs. Does anyone know how speed mapping is programmed?

There is a way to turn the alerts off but it needs doing every time you turn the car on.

I can't detail the sequence at the moment as Stoneacre still have my car to replace the camera. I only had it 5 days from new before it went tits up!

When (if) I get it back I'll do some screen shots of the sequence.

They've given me an i30 and that is a problematic too. It detects side street signs and dings and sets the alerts to that speed. It even picked up a 15mph sign from roadworks and kept it for 2 miles.

Hi Gannet15.

I have an all electric Kona but assume that the speed bongs/dings and their control is similar for both cars.

To try and answer the question of how the car works out the speed limit.... well it appears to have some knowledge of the speed limit for the location, presumably using GPS, but it also obviously uses the cameras to read what it thinks are speed limit signs. However, like me, it is not perfect. The car often reads speed limits on nearby roads and interprets early warning signs as actual speed limits, etc.. This is one of the reasons why I like to turn of the dings which I think ding far too often and are distracting. That said, the error rate for the Kona is far lower than on my previous Cupra.

And how to silence the dings..... For me, since the latest software update, the easiest way to turn the dings off is to press the knurled volume knob on the right of the steering wheel for about 3 seconds. A small banner then briefly pops up on the infotainment screen and the speed limit dings are silenced, though the displays still show what the car thinks is the current speed limit. This needs to be done after every restart but it is easy enough to do and no great distraction.

I hope that helps.

If you have the Kona EV there is an update that will allow the use of the steering wheel volume mute button long press to toggle between "speed limit assist" with bongs and "speed limit information" without.
This update was released in August and is Version 240719.
I used the "Navigation updater" from the website to start the process. This allows you to download the update and then copy it to a USB stick. I had a 32GB type C but this would not work, I had to use a 64GB. This is odd as the copied files are "only" 24.4GB and the 64GB stick seems to have been formatted by the process to 32GB. The download and the copying to USB took about 1 hour for each.
Armed with the USB I plugged it into the car and was presented with the option to update, I accepted and it went into an update in progress state. I turned off the car and left it overnight but it had not completed.
I then turned on the car and the update proceeded but without giving any clue to how far it had got. I left the car on, shut it and waited. I then started getting Bluelink warning messages about the car being unlocked and left on.
Eventually, may be 60 - 90 mins switched on time, It stopped updating. Then I switched off and the on again and was offered to "update now" which I selected. `This was then quite quick may be 10 mins and I got a Bluelink msg telling me that the upgrade was finished. The good news after all this is that IT WORKS, I can now toggle the bongs without messing with the screen.
